An old but very living tradition:
The nativity scene, a major symbol of Christmas, depicts the birth of Jesus. Its origin dates back to the 12th century, when it emerged following the rediscovery of the stories of Jesus' childhood by theologians. Inspired by the Gospel of Saint Luke, it represents the stable in Bethlehem where Mary and Joseph took refuge due to lack of space in an inn. The term “crib” derives from the Latin “criperia”, meaning “manger”. Francis of Assisi popularized this tradition in 1223 with a living nativity scene in Greccio, Italy. Later, the Jesuits introduced scale models into Eastern European churches, contributing to its spread across the continent.
 
The art and tradition of the Christmas nativity scene holds a central place in Christianity, depicting the nativity of the baby Jesus. This artistic form has developed over the centuries, demonstrating creativity and cultural diversity; artisans crafting figurines in wood, paper or even clay like the santons of Provence for generations.
